Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board is to celebrate its silver jubilee.
On this occasion, Reserve Bank of India is putting into circulation a
coin of denomination of Rs 5.
Unfortunately, Muslim community has objected to
this coin being put into circulation and have threatened to protest against
this.
Dr Azimuddin, chairman of Movement for Human
Welfare said, “Ours is a secular country and featuring the picture of a Hindu
goddess on the coin will harm secularity,” while adding that “Coins are given
to beggars and tossed by saints during holy processions. With such instances,
it is not proper to imprint a picture of a deity on it.”
Meanwhile, spokesperson of Sanatan Sanstha Abhay Vartak said, “Coins
bearing pictures of Mother Teresa, Alfonso have been issued in the past. What’s
wrong if coins embossed with images of Vaishno Devi are circulated?”
Why should anyone have objections as earlier coins with picture of
Mother Teresa have been circulated?
This is a result of appeasement policy.

hmmm. I don't know what to say. We have to bring our personal views into everything in India.
In my opinion, coins meant for circulation should not bear the picture of any God or Goddess, be it of any religion or community.
We are adept in much ado about nothing. aren't we?
However let me state my opinion on this.
Mother Teresa and Sis Alphonso and the likes- mortals are honoured through the issue of commemorative coins, currency notes and postal stamps. By the same yard stick , Vaishnodevi or Krishna or Siva too have the right to be on the coins and stamps.
But then why do we have to imprint unseen Gods on postal stamps or coins?
Do we have shortage of greatness in mortal forms , men and women who lived larger than life in flesh and blood?
BTW, I'm astonished and pleasantly surprised by this strange note of reverence from the Muslim organisation who objected to the Vaishnavadevi coin because people may not be respecting it when they throw it as alms etc.

Portraits of God or Goddess as we know are a figment of someone's imagination isn't it? Lets say; for eg. If Indian govt to appease secularism will also decide to print Lord Jesus Christ. Isn't that they would put a pic of Ceaser Borjia in reality :)

It is funny that such issues would gain more importance and a lot of time would be wasted on addressing such things rather than working on issues that need urgent attention.
Since, we are a secular country, why create issues with having pictures of Gods/Goddesses of one community. When we very well know that soon there would be demands from other religions to commemorate their saints and Gods...

Indonesia is a Muslim country. Still, their currency note of Rupiah 20,000 depicts a picture of Lord Ganesha on it.

I know! See, its all about opinion. I would any time appreciate a coin with natural history, monuments or great men than religious figures. If Indonesia has an image of Lord Ganesh inspite of being a Muslim country; it shown their tolerance, In India, though we tom-tom about secularism, we aren't.

I'm of the view to keep the sacred Gods off the coins and currency notes, except the ones that are worshiped, such as on the Diwali day. But one can always have the emblem of the shrine board on the coins.
